As the names suggests, Serendipity came into being through a fortuitous discovery.
In 2001 Jo was intuitively drawn to an eye-catching block of land on a distinctive sugarloaf on Ripponvale Road behind Cromwell, Central Otago. Jo recognised the potential of her serendipitous discovery, considering this north-facing, free-draining land viable to be developed into a vineyard.
Jo set about developing a plan to realise her passion to have her own wine brand. She invested her time in the completion of a two-year viticulture diploma at Otago Polytechnic and studying for her Intermediate and Advanced WSET. At the end of 2003, she took the step of planting 8 ha of her 14 ha property in Pinot Noir and Riesling – creating Serendipity Vineyard.
With intuitive foresight, she leased out the young vineyard with a 10-year vineyard management contract, enabling the vines to mature under more experienced management. During this time Jo took the opportunity to learn more about the industry and prepare herself for the launch of the Serendipity wine brand.
Following a carefully planned path, Jo has put purposeful steps in place to make things happen and capitalise on the opportunity offered by her serendipitous discovery. She brought in a team of experts, including award winning consultant winemaker Carol Bunn along with viticultural and marketing professionals to establish the foundation for the Serendipity wine brand. With Carol’s guidance, Jo procured quality grapes from nearby vineyards to enable them to launch Serendipity wines on a small scale, with a view to having an established brand in place when the fruit from her own vineyard becomes available to her.
Carol has embraced Jo’s brief with passion producing a distinctive ‘Serendipitous’ style. The spirited and upbeat approach with which Jo began her vineyard venture by spontaneously making the most of a series of serendipitous discoveries, reinforces the feeling that anything is possible.
